Time For Learning
As a homeschooling mom to 4, I have used a variety of different resources to meet the educational goals that we have set for our kids. Our foundational goal for our kids is that they 'love to learn.' If they love to learn and understand how to find information, they will be life-long learners and will be able to tackle any subject that comes their way.
Currently, I have a 6th grader, a 3rd grader, a Kindergartener and a pre-school student. We live in Honduras in a remote area, so we have limited opportunity to obtain books and curriculum. As we approached Kindergarten for Adam, I evaluated our options. While I had some material left from my older kids, I knew that my time was more limited now and that we needed another solution.
Adam specifically wanted to do more of computer-based program for a few subjects. I searched online and most programs started at 2nd grade, when students were more comfortable readers. Finally, I stumbled upon Time 4 Learning. It is a complete web-based program of study that begins with preschool.
Honestly, I was doubtful that such a program could really accomplish anything close to a traditional Kindergarten program. I decided to give their free trial a go. Adam loved it! And, most importantly, it actually does teach and evaluate. Because Adam is an emerging reader, the program has audio instructions which encourages active listening.
We have been using Time 4 Learning for over 4 months and are thrilled with Adam's progress. We hope to use it for Aaron next year, too. It does meet our foundational education goal - a 'love for learning.'
The challenges with the program for our specific family are first, the cost and second, internet access. We are on a tight budget and the cost of $19.95 per month is expensive. However, when I compare the cost per year to the costs of other computer-based programs, we can justify the expense a bit better.
The second challenge for us is internet access. Because we do live remotely, there are times when we have no internet access or slow access that will not allow the program to run properly. This challenge would not be a challenge for a family living in the US.
Overall, we wholeheartedly recommend the program Time 4 Learning if you are looking for a computer-based program for your young student.
